Written by Kimberly Britt, directed by Uyouyou Adia, produced by Modupe Fakorede and Executively produced by Pere Egbi (also starring as Zaki) alongside a host of other Executive Producers, this film titled “THE SILENT INTRUDER” which was hitherto released to cinemas is now available for streaming on Sunesis Pictures YouTube Channel.
Synopsis: (MAY include spoilers)
Catherine (Uche Montana) and Dave (Kachi Nnochiri) are a married couple. While the former is unhappy with a rather unquenchable sėxual drive, the latter appears oblivious of same as he seems a contented man.
Zaki (Pere Egbi), on the other hand is a therapist/marriage counselor who has a weird obsession.
Both worlds would collide and the rest of the movie sees upheavals, chaos and a series of unfortunate events. How did these play out? Who was responsible for what?
Well, why not grab your popcorn and or favourite drink, munch and sip along as you follow on this ride through this psychological thriller with a runtime of 1hour 55minutes.
MY TAKE:
So, I finished watching this and wasn’t sure how to feel as I tried to process things. The takeoff scene via a strip club sees Zaki showing up taking a seat amidst a bubbling hall of club music and ambience. First impression, his acting was a bit off.
As the movie progresses and we hear Zaki talk, my goodness, I was blown. His diction is delicious which is further flattered or enhanced by the incredible cinematic audio. Directing here is seamless as the sequencing is brilliant.
Camera quality, props, costume, set design, background music, script…amazing.
Uche Montana brings on her A-game as always as she shines bright with an impeccable role interpretation. Face card everly unmistakably on point. There’s chemistry where it should be.
The therapy session scene was educational and somewhat passed a salient message for couples “Not knowing there’s a problem could in fact be the problem!” This is a core area many marriages I believe are facing. That was clever!
Another lesson I picked up from this is that in your quest to find answers and solution for something, be careful not to destroy whatever you’ve laboured for over the years including your very self.
While the casting is great, I can’t say the same for the characterisations itself. Zaki’s character as well as that of his secretary Keta lacked depth. These, including some other areas leave many questions unanswered viz:
OBSERVATION/QUESTIONS:
1. There are many psychopaths who do not particularly need a reason to be the way they are but a little bit of a backstory for Zaki would have helped put things in perspective here. Is it childhood trauma-based? Or just an obsession picked up somewhere into adulthood? This would have given for more impact especially given the genre.
2. What was in it for his secretary Keta (portrayed by Lucy Ameh)? Okay let’s just say she appears to be attracted to him. But it was rather confusing. Zaki’s outburst towards her when she confronted him too seemed out of place.
3. What was Keta’s rationale to have gone back to Zaki’s office? What was she hoping to find? How did she know where the camera was? If she knew all along, why did she act surprised?
4. Who goes to use the restroom in a public place leaving their personal effects including phones in the presence of a total stranger? Please make it make sense?
5. And how did Zaki gain access into a lady’s phone without her knowledge? In this day and age of passwords? Oh puuuuleeeease! Ok let’s just say he’s a psychopath and people like that often have their ways but that didn’t fly if you ask me! It was a major headscratcher and an eye-roll worthy moment!
6. There was a mix up in names at some point in the third act. Script supervisor should have picked up on this. For instance, Carrie (played by Venita Akpofure) referred to Catherine as Carrie. I guess that was just an oversight.
7. Dave said to someone “You were a surrogate….!” Why then did Catherine express shock when the cat was let out of the bag later on?
How does this even connect with the rest of the story?
See, there were a lot of inconsistencies and loopholes in this film. Things got rather steamy quickly. Where and how did we get to the gün part?
Was that even necessary? If it was, then the build up wasn’t adequate in my opinion.
The movie, we’re told is based on a true story but the plot wasn’t as compelling for believability. The twist equally was devoid of that WOW-FACTOR especially given the genre being a psychological thriller. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen way too many movies with this theme. But naaaah! The very ending itself left even more questions!
Now, as per the title, I’m still trying to fathom how SILENT the INTRUDER was?
Maybe that qualifier should have been eliminated entirely! “THE INTRUDER” would probably have been just fine! Or perhaps “THE GENTLE INTRUDER”
Overall, the movie is not a bäd watch. It is entertaining and relaxing for the most parts. It just would have been better if only someone wasn’t trying so hard to make this movie EXTRA! It was glaring to be honest! In this case, a little would have been more.
Least I forget, please DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WATCH THIS NEAR KIDS AS IT IS EROTIC with depictions of nudïty & some wild audacious behaviour especially at the opening scene!
Was prepared to rate this higher but from where I stand, I couldn’t help but give the score above. No hard feelings!
