Written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry, the first part of this comedy series titled “She the People” is currently streaming on Netflix.
SYNOPSIS: (MAY include spoilers)
Antoniette Dunkerson (Terri J. Vaughn) is running for the seat of the lieutenant governor in the Mississippi State election. Her intentions are pure and noble.
When her teenage daughter Lola (Drew Olivia Tillman) decides to go party with adults and posting inappropriate videos of herself dancing on social media on the day of the election, Antoniette’s chances of winning which were already slim enough hang by a thinner thread!

(well, be careful so you don’t chôke from excessive laughter) whilst watching the first part of this very hilarious & fast paced 8-episode comedy drama series with an average of 25 minutes each.
MY TAKE:
Been a while since I laughed this hard! While the series contained an uncomfortable amount of cuss words and racïal jokes (that weren’t really funny as intended), I find that there are lines and scenes that cracked me up big time.
Although some acting weren’t as impressive, like I didn’t really feel the vibes from Tré Boyd who played Titus Dunkerson as Antoniette’s son as he was too passive for comfort , the performances from about 95% of the cast was good. My best were from Terri J. Vaughn (my goodness, I love how she interpreted her role), Jade Novah who played Shamika…gosh, she was everything in this series – simply hilarious.
I also loved Dyon Brooks who played the character of Basil. The back and forths in the scene where the creepy butler clapped his hands for the housekeepers to come in and Basil would literally clap back and the housekeepers would go back…geez, I haven’t laughed that much in a movie or series in a while!
Too funny! Or should we talk about the part where Antoniette was asked “is he a threat?” and she replied to say “yes, to all the COLOURS?” My oh my!
Can’t express enough how much I loved this.
There were some unrealistic things about the show like someone punching a kid in the face and still winning an election and not get prosecuted for that and also some other inconsistencies in scripting, this however had some good lessons it passed.
The confidence exuded by Antoniette. I super loved it. She was patient, loyal and humble. But when all these were thrown back at her face and she was pushed to the wall by Governor Harper (Robert Craighead), she threw caution to the wind and gave it back to him – aura for aura. I couldn’t be any prouder of her! I was literally screaming at my screen, like “that’s my kinda woman…whooop whooop!”
Instead of lying to your kids when you know they’re not good at something, cheering them on and misleading them, it’s best to tell them the truth albeit subtly and with love…not in a harsh manner.
Some pastors are only after what they stand to gain as per their pockets as seen in the character of Revd Jones (portrayed by Reggie Gaskins). What was all that his sudden screams for by the way!
This was a pretty good watch! I binged it in one sitting! The soundtrack set the pace and it kept on going and going till the 8th episode and I didn’t even want it to end anymore. Now I can’t wait for the second part coming on the 14th of August, 2025!
