Written, directed & produced by Frank Rajah Arase and Executively Produced by Mercy Johnson-Okojie (also starring as Sonia), this movie titled “A Woman Scorned” is now streaming on the latter’s YouTube channel with same name.
With a runtime of 1hour 47minutes, this drama tries to highlight the length at which a woman is willing to go when she feels she’s being taken for granted by the one whom she loves.
Synopsis: (MAY include spoilers)
Stacy (Regina Daniels) on the one hand is married to Eric (Majid Michel) but their marriage isn’t particularly a bed of roses. Feeling the thorns in their home after some unpalatable occurrences, Stacy would then take matters into her own hands.
On the other hand, Sonia (Mercy Johnson) is equally married but her escapades aren’t exactly paying off in good coin. Both worlds would collide but the outcome isn’t very exciting for one of the parties.
What happened? How did things play out? Well, you decide whether you’d grab your popcorn and/or favourite drink to munch and sip along as events unfold in this thriller-ish drama.
My Take:
Phew! This movie did my head in to be honest! Saddened by how much this could have been good as the storyline had potentials but got muddled up in a lacklustre plot and a hasty kinda direction devoid of proper cordination that consequently threw everything all over the place.
We’re made to understand that someone’s in a coma. Now, without any mention of needing some financial intervention or establishing same, out of the blue, there are talks about a donor! Ah! From where to where, bayi?
While camera quality and sound were good, line delivery as well as scripting were dodgy in some parts. For instance, “bïtch is a karma!” This should actually be the other way round, right?
Another example, an attorney asking someone who’s supposed to be mourning “you don’t look happy, what’s happening?” Ok! I see she should have been throwing a party!
Acting-wise, hmmmm, even Mercy Johnson in all her glory couldn’t help much in giving this movie a boost. Oh how I miss the days when Regina Daniels used to feature in movies where her character is either possessed by a dëmon or has got some supernatural powers going.
She played those roles effortlessly & believably well.
And personally, that’s what endeared me to her! In this particular movie, I observed that her performances were fluctuating.
If I may, I’d suggest she looks towards more of psychological thriller roles. She’s super fantastic at that. It was evident in this movie. As for drama-drama, naaaah! Maybe it’s just me thinking this though.
The receptionist, the doctor, the personal assistant to Eric, including the barrister/attorney; all these had poor interpretation of roles if you ask me. Now, about that, on whose side was that lawyer?
The P.A to Eric does look like Regina Daniels. Or is it just me?
Character development here too was sort of shabby. The writer tried to make this complicated and twisted but the twists were not convincing enough; especially the one in the end which was meant to have been the major plot twist. Oh that was weak as weak can be.
For a viewer like myself, I feel like that didn’t really hold much! Plus, we didn’t get to see the reaction on Sonia’s face when the big reveal played out. That should actually have been the icing on the cake. But never happened!
Speaking of Sonia, there were inconsistencies in her relationship and talks with her husband. This minute we hear a story about waiting for five years to conceive, reason why she did what she did. (Is that even supposed to be something a woman would tell a husband in such circumstances?)
The next, towards the end of the movie, the husband is surprised she did what she did! Oh my!
CONCLUSION:
This movie tried to be educational but that didn’t really fly as much as it was intended, in my opinion. Furthermore, never seen a more rushed ending in a movie. Sonia’s character seemed to have been forgotten. Hence, the overall outcome did not make as much impact as its title. Had the director or writer kept the story simpler, perhaps, we would have had a more enjoyable result.
There’s more to add but I’d rather not!
As with everything else, although this didn’t do it for me, it may very well be for you as one man’s meat, they say is another man’s…!
