Based on a harrowing true tale, this Netflix English dubbed film titled “A WIDOW’S GAME” is directed by Carlos Sedes.

The 2hours 2minutes long Spanish Crime psychological thriller gives a vivid view of desperation, manipulation, lies, deceit on the part of the perpetrator and determination, devotion & critical investigation on the part of the Sedes’ Spanish police led by Eva Tores (Carmen Machi).

Highlighting the complexities surrounding a nymphomaniac (sėx addict), we are taken through the world of a widow María Jesús Moreno ‘Maje’ (played by Ivana Baquero) who later becomes the primary suspect following the gruesome mürder of her husband Arturo Ferrer (Álex Gadea).

This movie is one that is audaciously deliberately predictable due to it being based off of a true story, yet manages to keep a viewer like myself hooked with intrigue and a somewhat continuous suspense till the end.

The approach to storytelling here is incredible. The casting & acting were equally just as good. The picture quality is appealing with an appropriate tone, sound score and pacing.

“A Widow’s Game” portrays the consequences of family traditions and/or religious beliefs & practices vehemently opposed to divorce.

Not suitable for younger viewers as it’s purely an adult-based film with scenes depicting such. I appreciate how the director spared us the gory sight of a victim being stäbbed with what we would later know as a kitchen knife.

There are times when the movie gets a bit confusing especially when multiple names of Maje’s lovers were mentioned but with patient viewing, you’d be able to catch up and follow the story.

The ending also felt rushed. Would have loved to see the expression on Salvador’s face when he found out he’d been manipulated all along and finally came to terms with his reality.

Overall, this is a good watch. For some reason, it felt like a series to be honest but hey, it’s a feature film. Although disturbing considering the realisation that a pretty face could hold dark ügly secrets & the length at which they’re willing to go just for the sake of freedom, however, the movie in itself is educational, compelling, interesting and entertaining.
